Madhouse Brewing Company

About Madhouse Brewing Company

Madhouse Brewing Company originated in Newton, IA, in 2009 then moved to downtown Des Moines in 2013. A year later, they opened a taproom for beer enthusiasts to sample seasonal beers and small-batch brews.
Madhouse specializes in American craft-style beers like barrel-aged and sour ales. A portion of the proceeds of some Madhouse beers goes to Trout Unlimited, a non-profit organization devoted to protecting and improving cold water fisheries and watersheds.

IPA Labels

We were asked to design beer labels for two new Madhouse brews. The first is a Session IPA called Kinky Zonker, and the second is a Citra Session IPA called Woolly Bugger, both named after types of fly lures.
We donated our time to design the two labels in support of the Iowa Driftless Chapter of Trout Unlimited. Each label incorporates its respective, unique fishing lure, along with fun colors and natural, outdoorsy elements that set them apart from the dozens of other beers on the shelf.

Sour Ale Labels

Madhouse Owner Mason Groban brewed up some interesting sour ale combinations that were a departure from the standard suite of ales readily available in the area. He wanted the labels to reflect his unusual approach, making a statement about what beer could be and providing a fresh face for the new varieties. With four distinctive flavor combinations, everyone was bound to find a sour for their palette.
Madhouse wanted the new labels to each connect with a different personality as well as illustrate flavors. These labels do just that, providing vibrant contrast with a pop of fruit and spice—just like the beers!
