Why Does My Business Need Social Media?

Are you still trying to figure out what all of this hype about social media is? Maybe a Des Moines social media marketing firm has called your business looking to find your interest in growing your social media presence. Here are a few reasons why your business needs social media.

Your current customers are on social media. As of August 2013, 72% of online American adults are using social media platforms and that percentage increases every year! There is a good chance that a customer who has done business with you is also on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google Plus, YouTube, and/or Pinterest. Your business should be on social media to be able to interact with them. Being on social media also allows your customers to promote your business's page.

Your potential customers are on social media. Going back to the previous statistic, it shows that there is a good chance that your next customer is on social media! Consumers have needs and want to help solve a problem of theirs. It is getting more and more popular to go to social media or Google to find a product or service. Let's say one of your friends on a social media network posted a message to say how much they love business "X" and now you are able to go to that business's social media page to see what they have to offer.

To be top of mind. With daily social media posts, your messages and brand are being advertised to your social media followers every day. So when a consumer is in need for a product or service that you offer, they will have a better recollection that your business can help them out. How much would it cost to be top of mind with outbound marketing such as radio/tv commercials, billboards, and direct mail? See this INFOGRAPHIC. Essentially social media marketing is free and unlimited marketing of your business.

Promote products and services. Your business should be on social media to help promote your products and services. A website may not be able to explain what all it is that you provide, but social media can! Again, you have unlimited posting. However, being too "sales-y" can force your followers to block out your messages. Social media is also an opportunity to promote specific offers that your current customers may want to take advantage of.

Grow brand awareness. With a professionally designed social media page, your business should be able to tell a consumer what your business does in a blink of an eye. After your business has made a great first impression with consumers, grow the brand awareness of your business with daily messages that will get your followers to interact with you. For example, if Laura and Brian follow your business on social media and they post comments on your business page, all of Laura and Brian's friends will be able to see that they have interacted with your page. That is also a way to grow a social media following!

Engage with customers. Remember, you don't want to be too "sales-y" but you can ask interactive questions that will get your audience talking. Maybe you're looking for feedback or you want them to answer a trivia question. Social media has SOCIAL in its' name for a reason. Be social with your audience!

Improve SEO rank. Absolutely there is a good possibility that having a great social media presence will increase your website's SEO rank if the pages are linked correctly together. Google loves fresh content and Google will recognize someone from the business is posting content, as long as its relevant, and your business will get a boost in SEO rank.

Your competition. 93% of marketers say they use social media for their business. That means there are lots of people out there getting involved and managing a social media strategy. It’s becoming more common to include social media as part of an overall marketing budget or strategy, as opposed to when it was the outlier that no one wanted to spend time or money on. Don't let your competition beat your business to social media. If your competition is already on social media networks, it's not too late to start building pages!
